“Exploring Vilnius:
Along the Threads / Windward”

Congreve (imprints), cotton paper; book paper;
oriented strand board, plexiglass, lightbulb, 2023

Vilnius Art Academy

“Exploring Vilnius: Along the Threads / Windward” is a project that questions how mapping and personal measurement can be perceived, and also a project based on walking as a method to make the works happen. I choose walking because it allows time to pass naturally, without speeding it up, so that I can better empathise with my surroundings and be more attentive to the details of the city, to allow coincidence(s) to happen.

“Observ(ing) Vilnius: Along the Threads” is a set of maps of my walks from 1st September to 31st November, which also includes the walks from Vitalij Červiakov's “Walking Club” and the “Wandering laboratory” lecture, the walks from Rūta Spelskytė's Flaneur and Derive lecture, some of the walks from the symposium “Walking is still Honest*”, and the piece “A Year with the Meadows” by Darren O'Brien. The transparency of the work allows to reflect on the layered nature of time and the map as cutting through the city.

Meanwhile, the piece “Exploring Vilnius: Windward” is a 16-day observation of the wind direction, walking daily according to the direction of the wind and noting (conspecting) the circumstances. The project is an attempt to get to know Vilnius better, by observing and getting to know not only myself, but also my city.

I would like to thank very much all those who helped and contributed, for their help, support and faith: Vitalij, Rapolas, Austėja, Algis, Antanas, Milda, Goda, Vilius, Jelena, Justina, Rūta, Elena, supervisor Irma, VAA Design laboratory, and the others I may have forgotten.

I was inspired by symbol, showing wind direction (windbarb)
in vejas.akl.lt website, and used it in my artwork.

found objects, paper, transparent paper, notes, 2023-

Vilnius Academy of Arts
Trying to collect bits and pieces of everyday life and never forget - I'm always afraid of losing my reminiscences because of my fragmented memory, and at times I am conspecting my memories in my phone notes app and in my notebook. At the same time, it's an attempt to piece together random bits of the city - the location and circumstances of the find are written on the pieces of paper in which the found objects are packed. I only write down the situation when I return home or to the academy, sometimes not even on the same day - so it's an attempt to expand the boundaries and frames of my memory. The objects are different, from different days and places - so it's a kind of mapping of the city and memory.
