exhibition “travels and wanders”
in VAA gallery “Artifex”
2025.01.21 - 2025.02.07

travelling and wandering are ways to get inspired, create and learn about your surroundings and the world. through them, i discover the everyday details, souvenirs, memories of the Vilnius  live in and the other cities i visit, catching the wind and the joys. i explore Vilnius on foot, on trolleybuses and buses. i leave the city by train, by car, and i try to reflect all these experiences in the exhibition. the wind has been with me since i was a child – i was born by the sea, so i tame it in other places too. wandering and wind are connected by the English etymology of these two words.  the word “wander” comes from “wendh”, meaning to turn, to wind. wind has two meanings in English, one for a turn and the other for the movement of air masses. in the exhibition, these two meanings are intertwined. sometimes i travel with the wind, changing directions, exploring the differences between forecasts and actual experience. travelling and wandering is like an implied, invisible, yet felt inspiration for the creative process. i invite you to look at each installation in the three different rooms of the exhibition as separate mediums, segments that tell the story of a different journey.

i have drifted and wandered, sometimes
with thoughts, sometimes with words,
sometimes with footsteps, sometimes with
doings, and sometimes with reveries.
i collected fragments in Vilnius, in Liepaja, in
Kilpisjärvi, on trains, buses, trolleybuses, in
steps, in thoughts, and i kept trying to
answer the question why it is so good to
travel, to wander, and to keep changing
places and states of being.
i didn’t answer that question,
but i only answered myself that
what a beautiful symphony of trains
how good it is to listen to the heart of the railway

i didn’t answer this question,
but i only answered to myself that
all thoughts are calming down
like the sea after a storm
when you put one foot in front of the other
as you watch the words
of ads, letters, and other lost things crumble and
break
and when you go, without asking,
without a beginning or an end point
you probably get to know the world most of all.
you listen and notice
not only the songs of birds
the swaying branches of the trees
but also the swaying whiskers of a trolleybus
and the old colleague of his behind him

i didn’t answer this question,
but i told myself that
never the same and always different
and always elsewhere
and never the in the same spot
because the same place is always changing
in a few years’ time there will be a fence
the smells and the sights are always changing
the next day you meet in a new way
